The Department of Mathematical Modeling and Artificial Intelligence was created on the basis of the Department of Applied and Computational Mathematics, which since its foundation in April 1968 was headed by Ph.D. Borisenko B.N. The first teachers of the department – Ph.D. Siroja I.B., Kovalenko S.P., Kozhukhov V.D., Khomenko V.V., Fesenko V.T., Gerbin V.M., Mikhailenko S.V. Later, Chernyshev Yu.K., Fedorenko B.Z., Yalovkin B.D., Patokina A.V., Chernoshtan L.I. came to the department.
The department conducted educational work at all faculties in the subject “Applied Mathematics”, “Computer Engineering in Engineering Calculations”, and at the same time at the third faculty in higher mathematics and special chapters of higher mathematics. Since 1971, the department has been graduating in the specialty 0647 “Applied Mathematics”.
The department carried out a lot of scientific work in three areas:
1. Mathematical modeling of aircraft power plants (headed by Borisenko B.N.).
2. Pattern recognition (headed by Siroja I.B.).
3. Geometric modeling (headed by Goncharuk I.V.).
In the 80s, Professor Vladimir Logvinovich Rvachev worked at the department – an outstanding Soviet scientist in the fields of mathematics, mechanics, and cybernetics, laureate of the State Prize of the Ukrainian SSR, and academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR.
In June 1998, the department was transformed into the Department of Informatics, the main task of which was the teaching of computer science to most specialties of KhAI. The department consists of 19 teachers, including 2 doctors of sciences, and 8 candidates of sciences.
The opening of the specialty “Applied Mathematics” in 2000 can be considered a great success. In 2005, the department began recruiting for the specialty “Social Informatics”, the direction “Applied Mathematics”.
Specialists in this area are in demand in the sectors of the national economy, where it is necessary to solve the problems of modeling, forecasting, analysis, and synthesis of processes of various nature in technology, economics, and sociology.
The scientific work of the department is carried out in the following areas:
- Design of intelligent control systems and decision-making with fuzzy logic Sokolov A.Yu.
- Modern Problems of Gas Dynamics – Head Dr.Sc. Ugryumov M.L.
- The geometry of Multidimensional Objects – Supervisor, Ph.D. Kartashov A.V.
Doctoral dissertations by Sokolov A.Yu., Ugryumov M.L., candidate dissertation by Bakumenko N.S. Postgraduate studies in the department are formed from graduates of the specialty “Applied Mathematics”.
The teachers of the department are actively involved in the creation of new textbooks, teaching aids, and methodological literature.
The department actively participates in the work of the system of pre-university training of KhAI: classes are conducted at the PMS of KhAI, the aerospace lyceum, and bases of pre-university training are organized.
Today, the staff of the department continues the best traditions of its founders and makes a significant contribution to the development of the Faculty of Control Systems.
